Dress codes, half seasons and cliché

Dress codes for a fashion show, a party, a gala dinner and even a degree celebration..the words are in the public domain, but they refer to an almost esoteric meaning. A code of rules that serve as a parachute or as an instigator of panic? A way to suggest to guests what to wear, to avoid unnecessary slips, or the need to make sure that style and good taste don’t get lost due to a street style and new trends overdose?

Dress codes, how to understand them

“Playing dress up starts at the age of 5 and almost never ends” – Kate Spade

Dressing up for a special occasion is a little bit like wearing and playing with clothes. A label, or rather a contemporary syncretism that reminds us that the dress code’s measure unit is not only our interface with the world, but the interweaving of cultural, social and anthropological aspects – Ornella ‘Kyra’ Pistilli.
It ‘s an unwritten code that helps you feeling at ease in any situation. The diplomatic world has always used it to achieve the maximum success of an event. The guest knows how to behave and the host is certain that will impress.
On every  not-so formal occasions,  when a black tie is not required, the dress code could be anything and the opposite of everything.

Do we really wear the clothes that the dress codes suggests us?

Wondering about this question, Garance Doré starts making a distinction between New York ‘s events and those in Paris. The events in the Big Apple are public occasions, while the French, ones tend to be private. In the first of those two we go to be seen, in the second its to stay with friends. Therefore a New Yorker girl is researching her suit for a week, will probably will refer a dress to her beloved press office – if you have the good fortune to be a size 0 – and will rent a make up and hair stylist. The Parisienne instead will eventually decide to wear a pair of skinny jeans, heels 12, loose hair and a rouge lipstick.

Dress codes, social or cultural problem, but above all everyone’s problem.

The dress code ‘s variations are many and interpretations are not always easy.

Smart casual or business casual when a formal and professional look is required, but slightly more dressed than usual. This was the dress code for the big Chanel Metiers d’art event and that meant no long dresses, evening dresses nor ones that are too rich and sumptuous.. The main aim was a classic style with a hint of originality and creativity. A silk suit, a shirt and a pair of mens trousers, all with a good dose of confidence.

alpine glamour – the indication for a gala dinner in Cortina d’Ampezzo.

black tie – the suggestion for those  highly formal situations.

cocktail – when a knee-length dress is required.

dressy casual – when you just need to be a little less energetic.

creative black tie – when elegance with a dash of panache is required .

festive – glitter and sequins, advice that would make us very comfortable in this Christmas season.

In summary, a dress code is a little bit something in between half seasons and clichés, we want to pretend it does not exist, but then we realize that they are shared truths, we can hardly oppose.

The alternative is to escape from reality. A solution that can always work, if we have a bit of creativity. So, heedless of the dress code by the pool, the temperature which marks the winter’s arrival and the apparent inability to take off a matinee   during the week, we brought Mariù De Sica and John Galliano on the terrace of the Planetarium Hotel Rome Cavalieri‘s suite.

So, if you want to be sure not to go wrong, “dress everymorning as if you were going to meet your worst enemy” – cit.
