Instagram and social mass hysteria. At one time there were models, actors, photographers, fashion journalists, tourists, VIPs, interior designers, chefs and even common people. Today there are domains instead of names. Accounts instead of people. Instagrammers instead of all the professions mentioned before.

Each of us possesses the basic kit of mass distraction weapons. A smartphone, a couple of photo editing appa, a good deal of conviction to leave your house thinking about being the avatar of ourselves. The one you have built, hammering your brain with stolen, imitated, chewed mass distraction by hundreds of thousands of accounts that populate the web.

Instagram and social mass hysteria: let’s transfor influencer in maître à penser

The influence of marketing is not a concept born today. And neither yesterday. In the sixties there already was a certain kind of influencer: third parties able to influence a the company itself and its potential customers.

It is only with the internet and social networks that has assumed the connotation that most of us know, even including bloggers. This figure has a definite role and a scope. So it is not possible to auto define ourself an influencer, using the avatar, as explained above, we arbitrarily constructed.

We need to let the world not go so fast. If you’re doing that, you don’t reflect, and in these times we need to reflect more.

In these times we have to think more. This was said  by Alessandro Michele in the backstage of his last show . It would really be much more interesting if the majority of us will aspire to transform from influencers to maître à penser. Consequences and remedies for Instagram and social mass hysteria

McLuhan has faced a similar problem, about 50 years ago. His discomfort was due to the spread of television. Medium that surrounds us in a narcissistic turpor. The television then, and social networks today are likely to daze and influence us to the point of convince us  we are no longer ourselves.

If it is still true that the medium is the message, we should change our attitude towards the media social bombing. Avoid handing eyes, ears and brain, but use it interactively. Observe, study, understand and then use all of the information to find our place.

What makes us, us, and not similar to another. One that strengthens our identity and makes us entertained every day.
