What to do in Formentera. A list is not enough. The island is a state of mind. Reachable only by sea, after taking a flight to Ibiza. If you go once, you’ll go back forever.
“Formentera es la isla que no cansa. The island you never get tired of”
Spend time sitting on a rock facing the sea. Imagine. Listen to the voice of the wind. Magically the island’s surface will expand, drawing a new map – maybe incomplete and probably unreadable – of those 83 km2 of real unreality (from the book Formentera non esiste).
What to do in Formentera : where to sleep
Many will advise you to stay in Es Pujol, in the heart of the island. Don’t trust them. AIt’s the most tourist part with local, shops and nightlife. You can go there almost every night, but choose to sleep in Sant Francesc or Sant Ferran de ses Roques. You can breathe the typical Spanish atmosphere. The square with the church, the narrow streets with bars, music and handicrafts.
What to do in Formentera : best beaches
ILLETES: Absolutely the top beach, in a natural reserve up to the north. You have to pay 4 euro per car or scooter (FREE for bikes | walking) for admittance. You can stop anywhere along this stretch of pink sand beach. I really suggest to push yourself to Espalmador crossing with bag on your head a stretch of sea where the water is just uo to your waist. If you do not fancy walking you can also take a taxi water service at a cost of about 30 euro per person.
ES CALO DES MORT: they will recommend it as a treat. It is actually very small and hidden. Go there for a refreshing swim early in the morning.
ES PUJOLS walking up to ROQUETA: leave the scooter in Es Pujol and walk on wooden boardwalks along the beach to get to ROQUETA for a cold beer or a snack.
PLEASEREMEMBER: Formentera is an island, if the sea is rough on one side, on the other it will be calm.
What to do in Formentera : restaurants
The restaurants I suggest I have been advised by a local and I’ve tried them all. Local | typical refined cuisine.
EL MATINAL – SAN FRANCESC: have breakfast with organic products and at km 0 in the center of the capital. Great homemade yogurt.
CAN FORN – SAN FERRANT: at the end of the main street, an open space with wooden tables. Comfortable, cozy and very intimate. Ask for advice and take any of the local dishes – they will not disappoint you. Try the potato specialties. Good sangria that seems like water, but it will have an effect upon the second glass.
SA SE HERE – SES SALINES: by the sea. You can go to the bar next to it for aperitvo and go there for dinner enjoying one of the greatest Formentera’s sunsets. Great paella.
