Who is Peter Pan?

I don’t know how I came up with this topic; probably the reading of an article about the 100 books that everyone should know or Elisa’s post (theladycracy) – a dreamy surreal digression about the meaning of the perfect day – or even the recent departure of Robin Williams.

In any case, since yesterday I have in mind to understand who he is Peter Pan. Obviously the most define him as the protagonist of Barrie’s book “Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens” and even though the last time I visited those wonderful green spaces I was 13, I confess I didn’t read the book.

Of course I saw the movie (I know It’s not the same) and I though many time about wearing the famous Trilly’s dress during a not so recent Carnival, but most of all I associate this flying character to the syndrome, the one that leads the majority of us to be eternal children.

And It’s not without a hint of shame that I admit that I recognize all of the symptoms in myself, even more acute everyday.

Despite my research, I still manage to figure Peter Pan’s true identity out, but I assure you that there is more than one person – older than 5 years old – who thinks that this character really exists.

And they come to admit not only a metaphorical existence or the icon of a longing for something that may exist in the direction of the “second star to the right and then straight on till morning“; they believe to see and hear him in the evening when it gets dark.

However, I am such an inveterate dreamer and I will never say to anyone that the imagination is too much and so I keep on smiling and thinking that the only Peter Pan which really exist is the collar that is coming back in fashion this fall along with 60’s style. The one able to create the like a good girl look with a hint of malice.

Non so bene come mi sia venuto in mente questo argomento; probabilmente l’aver letto un articolo sui 100 libri che tutti dovremmo conoscere o  il post di Elisa (theladycracy) – un excursus onirico a tratti surreale sul significato del giorno perfetto – o ancora la recente scomparsa di Robin Williams.

In ogni caso è da ieri che ho in mente di capire chi sia Peter Pan. Ovviamente i più lo definiscono come il protagonista del libro di Barrie “Peter Pan nei Giardini di Kensington” e anche se l’ultima volta che ho visitato quei meravigliosi spazi verdi avevo 13 anni, confesso di no aver mai letto il libro.

Ovviamente ho visto il film (so che non è la stessa cosa) e penso di aver ambito ad indossare il famoso vestito di Campanellino in un non recentissimo Carnevale, ma più di tutto associo questo personaggio volante alla sindrome, quella che porta la maggiorparte di noi a voler rimanere eterni bambini. E non senza un pizzico di vergogna ammetto di riconoscere in me tutti i sintomi, sempre più acuti ogni giorno che passa.

Nonostante le mie ricerche non sono comunque riuscita a capire esattamente la vera identità di Peter Pan, ma vi assicuro che c’è più di una persona – di età maggiore ai 5 anni – che pensa che questo personaggio esista davvero. E ne arriva ad ammettere un’esistenza non in senso metaforico o come icona di un anelare a qualcosa che forse esiste in direzione della “seconda stella a destra e poi dritto fino al mattino”; sono convinti di vederlo e sentirlo di sera quando fa buio.

Comunque io che sono una sognatrice incallita non dirò mai a nessuno che l’immaginazione è troppa e quindi mi limito a sorridere e a pensare però che il vero Peter Pan che esiste sicuramente è il colletto che tornerà di moda il prossimo autunno insieme allo stile anni ’60. Quello capace di creare quel look da brava ragazza con un pizzico di malizia.
