Seriousness is a such a well known word to be almost unknown. In substance more than in its actual form. I’m still trying to understand why I’m feeling underwhelmed right now. A long way from Andy Williams’s singing “It’s the most wonderful time of the year”. This Christmas comes full of controversies, disappointments, uncertainties and so much disappointment.
Everything seems to disappoint. From the political situation to urban décor.
We are teased.
That’s what nobody likes anymore.
AAA Seriousness wanted. Does someone sell it?
I wonder whether we can ask Santa for it or if you should try to demand it in the real world.
I fear that in the current state of things, people have lost the ability to be serious.
Seriousness wanted and that’s not the contrary of lightness
The seriousness which I’m speaking about is not the opposite to lightness, frivolity, superficiality. It is rather a synonymous with responsibility, commitment and honesty.
An intellectual honesty you could talk about without linking it to that ability or attempt to be completely free. The one that avoids taking the pacifying compromise that leads us to try to please everybody.
On the subject of the moral version of honesty, well I don’t even try to write about it, because the concept is too important to be defined in a few lines. It would be enough for many to understand where the lack of seriousness is leading us.
Aim to be serious! Being respectful to ourselves and to others is the only goal we should have clear in our minds. I can not see other ways of proceeding in order not to fall into vagueness and obscurity that leads us to live groping in the darkness. Going forward in the arm as the fog that clouds the senses. Or lost in an ocean that erases traces and floods.
