All art has been contemporary

“All art has been contemporary” cit. 

This quote is partially true: all art has been contemporary during the time in which it was produced – this is correct – but this is not completely accurate. There is art that manages to go beyond its age or even recognized only after it … maybe that is the true ART.

When I started to say that I love contemporary art I’ve done it almost instinctively, then I read the book

and I realized that contemporary art is mainly a message. The artist’s to her\his audience. A message that could be evident in the neon signs of the Dutch artist Jeppe Hein: “I want to prove that art is nothing by itself, but it’s just what the public inform with it.”

Most often the message is hidden and you should carefully read over the appearance. Rarely, but it happens, the message is completely left to our interpretation.

I believe that contemporary art is today the most democratic and eclectic among the arts, we are all potential artists, not all of us are lucky enough to meet a Charles Saatchi – the Artaholic.

“Tutta l’arte è stata contemporanea” cit. 

Questa frase ha un fondo di verità: tutta l’arte è stata contemporanea nel tempo in cui è stata prodotta, ma sono completamente d’accordo.

C’è arte che riesce a essere contemporanea anche oltre la sua epoca o addirittura riconosciuta come tale dopo…forse è quella la vera ARTE.

Quando ho iniziato a dire che amavo l’arte contemporanea l’ho fatto quasi per sentito dire, poi ho letto  

“My Name is Charles Saatchi and I’m an Artaholic”

 e ho capito che l’arte contemporanea è più che altro un messaggio. Dell’artista al suo pubblico. Un messaggio che a volte è evidente come nelle insegne al neon dell’artista olandese Jeppe Hein: “voglio dimostrare che l’arte non è niente da sola, ma è solo quello che il pubblico nota in essa”.

Più spesso il messaggio è nascosto e bisogna leggere attentamente oltre l’apparenza. Raramente, ma accade, il messaggio è lasciato alla nostra interpretazione.

Credo che l’arte contemporanea sia oggi la più democratica e eclettica tra le arti, tutti siamo potenziali artisti, ma non a tutti capita la fortuna di incontrare un Charles Saatchi – l’Artaholic.
