From the presssroom of Alta Roma, during the last day I am writing this article that I particularly care about. Because we are speaking about Ethical Fashion. Because usually the words Luxury and Africa are not in the same sentence. To those who think that fashion is only superficiality and void the project “Africa to Rome” proves that they are wrong.
❣❣❣
“Not charity, just work” the slogan of an initiative that compares five designers who make living the artisan skills from Ghana and Burkina Faso.
on the Roman catwalk.
The ferment before the start was loaded with electrifying strenght. Guests, press officers and the whole international scene colored the room with vibrant and shimmering. A sort of amazing preview of the show. A way to prove that the “street” is the first place where you can show Fashion..
The spotlights are switched on after a short video on Christie Brown. Ethnic prints with a chic light motif made of thin and light fabrics, wrapped sarongs, different lengths and asymmetrical cuts, all on Batick prints completed by flashy jewelry.
A change in the music and the scene belongs to the duo Portenier Roth. Here the elements change. All is played with overlaps and volumes. T-shirts can be glimpsed under transparent fluo tunics. Black and white belts combined with shiny bands. Cut tailoring pants with maxi decorative pockets, man shoes and black socks. Iridescent fabrics in bright colours, completed by opaque yarns, create bizarre broken outfits.
Kiki Clothing makes a real tribute to African typical patterns and textures embellished with gold threads.
And finally the long-awaited Stella Jean. The winner of Who is on Next of the previous edition showed us that she really deserves the initial applause.
She didn’t miss anything in her collection mixing together the flavours of Africa and the styles from other countries.
A typically American allure made of retro inspired shortsr, striped shirts, straw hat and sunnies that you are immediately catapulted in one of those movies where you don’t need to close your eyes to dream.
Checkered knotted shirts, bustier dresses, bandana, large volumes and a real abacus of skirts: from the classy longuette to the funky skatert.
Fashion does not need to be luxurious to let you dream.

Great post! So much fun to read about your experience and these pictures are fabulous! <3
My experience was so breathtaking. I’d like to post the music of the catwalks too, making you feel there for real. I’ve recorded everything. I’ve tried to take pics of what I loved most, I not always had the best position to take pics, but I want to use only my own stuff :). Thanks Caity. I wish you could come one day!
Love the print dresses and the head gear are lovely as well …. Africans designers are sure going places.
Actually all the collections have been made in Africa, but the designer are not Africans :). It’s an amazing project and result is stunning. thanks for stopping by Kimberly. xxx
Oh!!!! really? that’s even better, glad to see all the beautiful designs posted by you.
beautiful!
It’s beautiful. It’s ethical and it’s fashion. I’m very proud I’ve been a witness for this event. xxx
Yes, great and thanks for sharing!
Like some of the fashions, but why not have non-models on the runway. Yes, what is wrong with being curvy and wearing these dresses. I like many of the prints but I have more of a shape. I don’t like to see clothes hanging off of these models. Just give me more fabric, I’ll wear it. I ain’t scared! I like colors and patterns and prints. I like variety. Or do need to make my own? Already working on it. Thanks for the photos. You gave me lots of ideas.
I perfectly understand what you mean. Definitely the models don’t represent the stereotype of the lady these clothes are inspired by. Anyway this catwalk has been presented within a High Fashion one week event and the models look more like mannequins. This is the way Fashion presents its collection first, then I guess each woman can re intepretate it with her own features and characteristics. I’m very happy you can use my photos for your models and I hope to see you creations soon. have a fabulous day
Thank you for helping me understand the event better. I guess I assumed( which I should not have done) that this was for everyday people.
You are welcome sweetie. The final aim is to dress everyday people, maybe not in any “normal” occasion, so your comment was more than appropriated. Baci
You must feel very lucky to attend such an amazing event. Love the collection and especially the last couple of pictures. I’ve always been a follower of ethical fashion. The creativity and innovative thinking is so much more refreshing and each season they chose to focus on different topics. Loved it totally! 🙂
Those pieces were magnificent! I believe that everybody have the place in fashion – this collection proves it to be true 100% 🙂 Great post!

amazing pattern on pattern!
I love this entry of yours. I’m a Filipina. The first thing that comes in to my mind when I first read this entry is it looks like a fashion of one of our local tribe. The cloth looks like a “batik” from a city here in the the Philippines, the city of Zamboanga. More power!
